VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A retired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel will face at least 10 years behind bars after pleading guilty in a child sex case.
Michael Popovich was sentenced to 20 years in prison -- with 10 years suspended -- after he pleaded guilty to two counts of using electronic means for procuring minors for obscene material.
From our Tetrad Core consultant regarding this investigation: "Methodical" and "calculated" are two words to describe Popovich. His method of grooming began by being humble and full of charm to, what he believed, was a 13-year-old girl. During almost three months of chat, his terms of endearment changed to ones that were derogatory and humiliating in nature. Over 2,000 pages of chat, numerous phone calls, and him performing sexual acts via webcam all add up to Popovich being the most disturbing individual our decoy has engaged with.
TetradCore would like to thank a few people that helped us get this case into the right hands in Virginia Beach.
We are forever grateful to Senator Dick Black, Senator Bryce Reeves and Congressman Rob Wittman, as well as local law enforcement, Virginia Beach Police Department, and the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney, Colin Stolle, and his staff.
We also appreciate all the efforts of Fairfield Police Department - Connecticut for being willing to coordinate with local LE on this case.
